The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center stopped issuing avalanche forecasts May 1. This is unfortunate this year because there is so much snow left in places that are usually accessible by this time of year. However, here is a general precaution about spring avalanche conditions that is worth reading.

If you look at some of the recent trip reports of snowshoeing to Mt. Defiance, Chinidere Mtn., and other snowy ridges, you'll have noticed plenty of images of overhanging cornices. These cornices are trouble waiting to happen. Those with less backcountry snow experience who want to duplicate those trips should be warned about cornices and the possibility of heavy slab avalanches. With temps forecast for the 80's next week (hooray!), the dangers will be much greater and there will be the additional hazard of unusually high water in streams. Be careful out there, folks, we don't want to lose any Portland Hikers!

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey
