For what it's worth:

(1) Elk Cove: In the Field Guide for Elk Cove Trailhead, the starting elevation is listed as 3600. I believe the hike starts at 3,250 feet (Sullivan and others), not 3600. The Field Guide for Elk Cove Hike uses the correct 3250 starting point so the two Field Guide pages aren't consistent.

(2) Eden Park: The Field Guide for Eden Park says it is 3 miles from the Vista Ridge Trailhead to Eden Park. The Field Guide for Cairn Basin says it is 3.3 miles from the Vista Ridge Trailhead to Eden Park (Sullivan says it is 4 miles, but apparently that's to the far end of Eden Park).

I know these two corrections are trivial but I figure you probably want Field Guide pages to match.

I wish notes like this were more common. I've got quite a few tweaks planned for the Elk Cove area based on my recent hike and I'll be sure to include your points.

I've noticed quite a few inconsistencies in our Mt Hood pages and I'll be working to correct them.



The Field Guide is a collaborative affort, not only of the people volunteering to edit the pages, but of the entire Portland Hikers community. I hope everyone feels free to point out any flaws, additions or needed changes, no matter how minor.

What do you suppose is around that next bend?

Steve: I'm technologically challenged and the wiki tutorial for editing seems way over my head.  I'll be happy to point out little nit picky things that might improve the Field Guide though.  It certainly is a terrific source of hiking information.

  In fact, here's another correction you might consider -- if you go to the Field Guide page and search for Mcneil Point this is what you get:

There is no page titled "mcneil point". You can create this page.

I just hiked to Mcneil Point (to the tip top) and I was surprised there was no Field Guide report on such a popular hike. Turns out if you search for "Mcneil point shelter" or "Mcneil point hike" or even "Mcneil Saddle" very nice reports appear. (I would have liked to have read them before my hike!) I hope you'll consider linking "Mcneil point" searches to all the great info you have on that area.  I would bet "Mcneil Point" is the search criteria most hikers use (searches for "Elk Meadows" or for "Cairn Basin" etc. bring up the reports whereas searches for "Cairn Basin Shelter" or "Elk Meadows Shelter" draw blanks.

What you noticed is the way that searching works by default in the Field Guide.  Notice next to the search box how there is a "Go" button and a "Search Button"?  When you typed "mcneil point" as a query, I'm guessing you did what most people do and hit enter.  By default it does a "Go" search, meaning, it trys to go to a page specifically made for McNeil Point, since such a page does not exist, you got the results that you did.  However, when the page doesn't exist, it will default to doing a search, so if you scroll down you should see links to McNeil Point Hike, McNeil Point Shelter etc.

The "Go" button is kind of, but not exactly, like a Google I'm Feeling Lucky search (take me specifically to this page if it exists), whereas search is more like a standard Google search.  Hope that explains things! 

Also, if someone finds it necessary- a page for McNeil Point could be made to redirect to the shelter page or something like that.  I'm no expert on the area, so I will leave that up to others.



Edit: I know you said you are technically challenged, but I am willing to tutor anyone on editing if they like, and you can start out real basic.  Otherwise, reports like this are super helpful.
