Legacy of 1930s New Deal to Be Commemorated on Mt. Hood

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of FDR’s New Deal legislation and its lasting effects on the Mt. Hood National Forest, several public events will be held May 31 on Mt. Hood. The celebration also honors veterans of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Presentations as well as guided and self-guided tours of historic sites and exhibits are planned for the entire day.

Historic Presentations of the Zigzag Ranger Station located on Highway 26 will begin at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 2:00 p.m. Guided tours of the facility and the first Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Oregon follow each presentation. Guide maps will be provided to assist visitors as they continue self guided tours of other historic camps, facilities, and historic exhibits.

Exhibits featuring historic photos, memorabilia, and CCC tools will be on display at the Mount Hood Cultural Center and Museum located in Government Camp. Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark, built by workers employed by the New Deal Works Projects Administration (WPA), will also feature an exhibit. Guided tours of the exterior of Timberline Lodge will show case work and landscaping accomplished by the CCC.

The day of commemorative activities is sponsored by Friends of Timberline, Mount Hood Cultural Center and Museum, RLK and Company (Timberline Lodge), and U.S. Forest Service. Admission to all activities is free.

For additional information, please visit the Mt. Hood National Forest’s web site at www.fs.fed.us./r6/mthood or contact the U.S. Forest Service, Zigzag Ranger Station at 503-622-3191.
