No...I'll give you a hint: it's in a Wilderness Area that rhymes with "Skull Of The Hoods". :)

Skull of the Hoods LOL - that gave me a nice chuckle this evening Smile

Tom, replying to your post of 2-21 - that is amazing.  I love your map.  I was just there Saturday.  I didn't know those falls had names, and I didn't know about #6.  We got a great, unobscured view of #1, but I used film and haven't gotten them developed yet.  Now I'm wanting to go back again already.

Tom, I'm confused: I know Gregory Plumb lists Pencil falls as the same falls you show, but I have an old video which shows this next falls after Heather as Pencil.  It also looks like a Pencil, so I've often wondered if Plumb had it mixed up with the one in Meadows under the lift.  Is there another source to clear this up?

    Hi Lynn,
As far as I know, that falls has no name, and is far enough from the mapped Pencil Falls that I think the video reference is just a mistake. I have called this one "Tiny Falls", for lack of some other informal name, and this derives from the frequent question "what is the name of that tiny falls just past Heather Creek"..? :)

Last time I was up at Pencil Falls, I was with Greg Plumb and Greg Lief. We had just visited Lower Yocum, Sahalie and Umbrella, and Greg Plumb decided to catch up on his paperwork while Greg Lief and I hiked up to Pencil Falls. But I know he's been to the true Pencil Falls before, and on that particular day, the water was quite low, rendering it less than spectacular.

Greg Plumb is very meticulous about documenting unmapped falls, so if there were any confusion on Pencil, I think he would have picked that up. On a previous visit, I hiked up to the various, unnamed waterfalls along the Herman Creek Trail with him, and he was using GPS to nail down the specifics of each falls, even though they were on mapped creeks, and fairly well known.

Thanks, I'm a great fan of Greg Plumb.  I have all(?) 4 of his books.

How about "Tiny Pencil Falls" since it's shaped like a pencil?Smile

OK... I'll chime in. Here are four mystery waterfalls, along with four hints:

    A. All four are described in Greg Plumb's books (though there are no photos of any of them).

    B. None of them are in the Gorge or Mount Hood NF.

    C. One is located near the Oregon Coast.

    D. There are no trails leading to any of them.

(Bryan, you are familiar with #1.)

Actually I'm familiar with all four (only been to two of them though), so I'll recind myself for the time being.  For what its worth, I'm about 95% positive that what you and Plumb have identified as #4 is not the one the maps label as such - topos suggest the falls are closer to 120 feet tall.  I'm assuming the one you shot is upstream a short distance, but I don't know how far for sure.

Hey zach, I wanted to thank you and tom for the info and pics on this thread.  I went up Munra creek from the Wahclella falls trail today and it was a blast!  I soon picked up the trail by the orange markers.  It rained almost the whole time and photographing the falls was difficult, but I took my time and they came out ok.  I just recently discovered this site and I love it.  I have hiked and photographed over 100 waterfalls in the last year.  It's good to know that thiers others that have bitten by the bug.  One of my greatest bushwacks was to Little Niagara falls in Washington by the Lewis river.    Happy Trails.

Did the orange markers begin above the bottom 3 falls?  I ran into these as well, but only after I had started traversing to trail 400.  They didn't seem to be heading anywhere in any particular order.  Do you suppose the FS might be planning a trail - perhaps an extension of 400?

    #2 Stout Creek Falls.
Is #3 a close-up view of Coal Creek Falls?
