Good write-up in today's "Oregonian" on the slide - good to know that people like Don and others are getting some credit for 'discovering' something like this. I was up on Table last Wednesday and the view from the summit of the slide shows the massive nature of it with trees everywhere and a huge devastation.

Here it the link to the Oregonian article:

I think we should name it "Nelsen's Slide"

The Seattle PI is one of the many news outlets that picked up the story.  (They added a link to this site at the bottom)

Just and FYI to keep these two threads connected.  Don took a second outing out there with even more photos:

There were trails through there, but you have to cross Green Leaf Falls at the lower end (not the great long one but the smaller one by the camping, rocky area).

I took a group up there last October (Trails Club and Mazamas members) and the trail crossing wasn't difficult. During spring, you cannot cross unless you plan to swim.

We saw the slide last month when we went to Aldrich Butte.

By "trails" do you mean the ancient logging road that goes north past the PCT and eventually crosses Greenleaf Creek then continues ESE toward Blue Lake? Years ago there was a large log bridge across the creek that has now been washed several dozen feet downstream. You can still see it - once held together by cables and railroad spikes. When I was up there last thursday, the crossing couldn't be made without wet feet, at the least. This past couple of years have really changed things!

I've heard from quite a few folks that had noticed the slide, as you did. Amazing that it didn't get more publicity sooner. I think chubbyfm should get naming rights but I don't know her real name.  She's the one that got the ball rolling towards publicity.

Hi Don, e74582 emailed me (had some problems with posting), her response was meant to your previous observation " There were no trails in the landslide area but the slide covers about 600 feet of the old logging road that we hiked in on. The bottom end of the slide is a jumbled mass of trees, roots and rocks that is from 20' to over 40' high in places". She said " Basically, you have to come through the other side (no road now, probably) where the landslide is."

I know e74582 and she has led LOTS of Table Mtn. hikes!  (And I will email cfm and ask her to reveal her identity to you:)

Don, I look forward to meeting you someday, but I prefer my web identity to  remain shrouded in mystique.

Likewise - and so you shall remain "in mystique"! - you can be the mysterious woman who got the publicity machine rolling on this slide. This has been interesting - I've received e-mails from Singapore, Hawaii, Scotland and even Finland since this story broke - wow - who knew anyone cared about about a plain old landslide.

Thanks, Jane - I appreciate that. Also, and off the subject, I appreciate your continuing efforts to let us know about the many trips and hikes planned by the many groups in the area.

Here is a nearly complete map of my travels up there and it shows just about everything I've tracked/GPS-ed: (I gotta keep a few things secret - there's some stuff up there we don't want too many folks to find!!) You can see where the new slide took out a couple of sections of that old road/trail.  One of the swichbacks is now buried in slide debris and about 600 feet of the road below that is seriously buried. You can get to the slide area from either end, but the easiest way is from Ashes Lake/Blue Lake road. (The road coming in from the ESE.)

At the location "Road gated, park here," there are serious no-trespassing signs that forbid any use of the road.  It didn't stop the hikers or the ATVers last Saturday.  Does anyone know the legal status of this road?

I have spoken with the landowner and he told me he doesn't mind hikers using the road. Legally, the road should be an easement to access the public and some private lands beyond, anyway but I don't know the specific details. The owner told me he has had numerous break ins and thefts at his property hence the signs and the on-site caretakers. Just check in with them (if they are there) and go on in.

Cross the Columbia in Cascade Locks on the Bridge of the Gods. Go east on Hwy 14 for 1/10 mile, turning north (left) on Ashes Lake Road. In exactly one mile, turn left on Blue Lake Road. In 1.1 miles, find the gated road heading uphill to the right.  If the caretakers are there in the old trailer, checking in with them is a good idea. Walk up the gated road for 1.3 miles to the foot of the slide.

    Have fun!

About two weeks ago, I tried to access the slide from the western side. The creek is raging and I couldn't cross it. Although I was only a short distance form the slide, the trees blocked the view. Therefore  it is best to follow Don's directions and take the road from Blue Lake as he suggests.
