PortlandHikers.com announces partnership with the Northwest Forest Conservancy
Outdoor groups to work together for hands-on trail advocacy

Jeff Black and Jeff Statt - March 24, 2007

This week PortlandHikers.com has agreed to partner with Northwest Forest Conservancy to promote and support a series of restoration and trail advocacy projects this year.  Specifically, NFC will organize and provide the tools and training for various trail-tending outings and Portlandhikers.com will rally the troops to help provide the manpower.

The Northwest Forest Conservancy is a non-profit, public-benefit corporation working towards protection and restoration of Northwest forests.  Among their 2007 goals is trail work in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness and other areas of the Clackamas River Ranger District.  They are also focused on restoring Bagby Hot Springs to a safe a historically significant destination for future hikers to enjoy.   This newsletter includes updates and reports on recent grants, volunteer opportunities, hiking trails, watershed cleanups, and a note from NFC president Michael Rysavy.

One of Portlandhikers' goals for 2007 was to begin aligning with area non-profit groups to provide support for trail-building and maintenance.  In falls of 2006 we worked with NFC to clear a section of trail in the Silver King Lake area, so this partnership is a natural fit.  We feel these partnerships have taken on increased importance in light of continual belt-tightening at federal agencies traditionally charged with these projects.

Now we need your help!  If you are interested in lending a hand for trail maintenance and restoration projects, please watch our home page in the coming weeks for more specifics on how to get involved.   Just one more excuse to be outdoors!!

NFC is holding a fund-raiser lunch benefiting the preservation of the Historic 1913 Bagby Hot Springs Forest Service Guard Station.  It will be held Saturday March 31st at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Clackamas, OR.  Guest Speaker will be Rick McClure—Heritage Program Manager of the Mt. Hood National Forest.   To reserve your seat please call 503-961-2946
